Going on a Gap Year in Spain

The Gap Year is a year that more and more students are choosing to take after graduating from higher education or before starting university.

This year is often dedicated to travel, cultural and sports activities, as well as volunteer projects and internships. It is also an excellent opportunity to prepare for future admission to the university and course of your choice in Spain.

In Spain, there are many opportunities for students who want to do a gap year. For example, you can participate in volunteer programmes with associations or NGOs, do an internship in a Spanish company or take advantage of your stay to participate in sports or cultural activities.

Don’t forget that a Gap Year is a unique opportunity to discover a new culture, meet new people and explore new horizons. Therefore, do not hesitate to use this opportunity to enrich your personal and professional life.

A gap year is not a holiday.

A gap year is a year spent preparing for and achieving your goals.

This includes preparation in Spanish if you plan to study in Spain, but that’s not the only thing.

There are also programmes that allow you to attend classes and learn more about different courses so that you can then choose the studies that really suit you.

This is what ‘Foundation programmes’ offer.

These are one-year courses, generally at universities, which open the door to the chosen course if you are successful.

This type of programme is suitable for students who are not yet 100% sure of their educational direction. And for their parents, you’ll be reassured to know that they’re in a traditional school environment, unlike a gap year as explained above.

  • Improve your language skills
  • Become independent and self-disciplined
  • Learn to open up to others to enrich yourself
  • Try out a career before continuing your studies
  • Define your academic direction,
  • Enrich your CV

As you can see, a Gap Year is much more than a sabbatical year. It’s a great way to make international friends, rediscover yourself and immerse yourself in a cultural, linguistic and intellectual experience.

The cost of a Gap Year in Spain can vary greatly depending on what the student is going to do. If you choose to work in order to gain experience and to give yourself time to think about where you want to go, the cost may be lower because you will have an income stream.

But obviously, taking Spanish lessons, joining a Foundation Programme or doing any kind of activity will have a significant cost for the student and/or the family.

Living abroad means having to pay rent, travel and all the usual costs of food, telephone calls, etc. In Spain, it’s difficult to budget for less than €600 a month in the cheapest cities. In reality, you’ll need to budget for between €800 and €1,000 a month to live properly.

Then you’ll have to add the costs associated with the programme you’re following.
